iAS-W

Overview
Traditional Access Done Right!

Wireless technologies are known to offer flexibility, short rollout time for services provisioning and investment scalability when it comes to deploying access networks.

The IAS™-W digital MW access platform, which is based on Point to Multi Point (PtMP) technology, has already proved itself as a state-of-the-art solution for the rapid and cost-effective provisioning of plain telephony and n x 64 kbit/s data backhaul services in difficult-to-reach areas.

IAS™-W is fully customized to meet the diverse operator needs. Apart from the utilization of field-proven copper access technologies at the last-mile, iAS™-W implements Radio in the Local Loop (RLL) scenarios that are of utmost importance when end-to-end wireless connectivity and minimum implementation cost are required.

Benefits
  • Customized offering for RLL networks.
  • Cost-effective and field-proven solution for legacy applications.
  • Environmentally-hardened and energy-efficient system.
  • Conservative usage of spectrum.
  • Trunk, access and add-drop repeater components.
Highlights

IAS™-W combines affordability and a rich set of features to bring operators significant benefits:

  • Optimum frequency use – TDM / TDMA FDD wireless access node.
  • 16 Mbit/s total net system capacity, allocated to 64 kbit/s and 32 kbit/s traffic channels (on-demand assignment basis).
  • End-to-end wireless access solution – combination of TDMA and DECT air interface technologies.
  • Wide range of frequency bands (1.5 / 2.6 / 3.5 / 10.5 GHz).
  • Low power consumption as a result of burst transmission mode in both UL and DL directions.
  • Support of a wide variety of legacy subscriber interfaces:
    • Analog 2-wire, for POTS (pulse or DTMF) / Fax / voice-band modems, and payphones (12/16 KHz metering pulses).
    • Analog 2- / 4-wire, for leased lines.
    • U-interface (160 kbit/s), for ISDN-BRA services.
    • Data interfaces, for n x 64 kbit/s data services (V35, V.11/X.21 or G.703).
  • Customized solutions for RLL (through DECT subsystem) and data networks (through the IAS™-Wd compact version).
Applications

IAS™-W constitutes an ideal solution for a variety of applications requiring rapid and cost-effective implementations.

Plain Telephony in Remote Areas

Low / medium subscriber density areas and/or harsh terrain environments are likely to have insufficient or unavailable infrastructure. IAS™-W satisfies in a cost-conscious manner the stringent time and capacity requirements in such areas needing plain telephony services.

Cost-effective Data Backhaul & Access

IAS™-Wc, the compact version of IAS™-W, allows for deploying cost-effective access or backhaul transmission data networks. The main applications include:

  • Wideband data services (n x 64 kbit/s) to SMEs and SOHOs.
  • Backhaul connectivity for fixed narrowband Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) networks.
Radio in the Local Loop (RLL)

The IAS™-W Terminal Node (TN) can accommodate a DECT subsystem to locally serve a great number of subscribers within a cell of up to 15 km radius. The typical system applications include:

  • Areas of high subscriber density requiring quick service provision, inclusive of toll-quality voice and high-speed data.
  • Areas where excavation and maintenance make copper-based access prohibitive.
  • Temporary networks in case of special events or in emergency recovery situations.
Technical Description

General

An IAS™-W PtMP network is composed of a central node and several terminal (and/or repeater) nodes configured to serve any required network topology in a range of several hundreds of kilometers.

IAS™-W can also be deployed in sectorized configuration to increase the system's total available capacity. The subscriber equipment is connected to the remote terminal / repeater nodes either through copper pairs, or directly through DECT air interface. In the latter case, the equipment of the subscriber is connected to the telephone socket of the DECT terminal installed at the subscriber premises.

IAS™-W networks can be configured, supervised and maintained with the in-house ARMS element manager application.

System Components
Central Node (WCN, CCN)

The single-sectored (WCN) or the compact (CCN) Central Node is the single connection point between the IAS™-W system and the telecommunications network, providing the uplink interfaces toward the Local Exchange and/or the data network, as well as performing the main control and traffic handling functions.
WCN / CCN supports the following network interfaces:

  • V5.2 Single-link (SL) / Multi-link (ML).
  • 2-wire (analog).
  • n x 2 Mbit/s (G.703), for data networks.

Terminal Node (TN)

The TN serves as the termination point of the MW network for the wired subscribers and is a cabinet suitable for outdoor or indoor installations. The TN communicates with the WCN (or the RN) through its embedded TDM / TDMA radio unit.

Compact Terminal Node (CTN)

The CTN, a compact version of the TN, is equipped with an integrated antenna system. It best fits areas of lower subscriber densities or individual users with high traffic / service requirements, thus enhancing both network design flexibility and cost effectiveness.

Repeater Node (RN)

The RN enhances the system coverage in cases where line-of-sight (between the WCN and the TN / CTN) is unfeasible or when very long hops are required. The utilization of cascaded RNs can extend the system range to hundreds of kilometers. The RN operates in traffic-through or drop / insert mode, and can provide all types of subscriber interfaces made available by the IAS™-W system.

DECT Subsystem

The DECT WLL subsystem provides an end-to-end fixed wireless connection to eliminate the need for drop wires in the local loop. This subsystem comprises the following units:

  • Wireless Subscriber Card (WSC): a card integrated into the terminal node; it performs all the required functions between the served subscribers and the core IAS™-W system.
  • Wireless Terminal Adaptors (WTA): DECT terminals for outdoor or indoor installation at the subscriber premises.
